Trailer types

The trailer types listed are the ones most commonly used by ACC.  Information supplied is a guide only and specifics may vary depending on vehicle manufacturer and year of production.

Curtain trailer/Euroliner

A curtain trailer has a PVC roof and rigid/aluminium rear doors. The sides are movable PVC curtains that can be drawn back for easy loading and unloading, it is suitable for most types of consignment and is the most common trailer used for road haulage.

Road train

A road train has a vehicle at the front, which pulls a trailer behind it, and the trailer could be a box or curtain trailer.

Reefer / Temperature controlled trailer

A reefer or temperature controlled trailer is the same as a box trailer with solid walls and doors which open at the back. It is used for consignments which need to be chilled, frozen or heated during cold weather to avoid damage to cargo.

Mega trailer

A mega trailer is a higher version of a curtain sider with a PVC roof and rigid/aluminium rear doors, and the sides are movable PVC curtains that can be drawn back for easy loading and unloading. Most mega trailers have a height of 3m and a raised top cover, it can be suitable for larger consignments or those of a certain height.

Flatbed trailer

A flatbed trailer has no sides or roof and is open to the elements, so goods need to be fully protected.

Low-Loader

Low-Loaders are set low to the ground for easy loading and often used for transporting heavy machinery or outsized items. There are no sides or roof and freight is open to the elements, so goods need to be fully protected. Low-Loaders come in various sizes, the longer the vehicle the more axles, which would allow for heavier cargo. Cargo will be limited by road conditions and potentially abnormal load regulations.

Sprinter vans

These vary in size from small to large vans. This type of vehicle is ideal when moving smaller or time critical loads as they are not subject to the same EU regulations as trailers.

Offloading requirements
